Kuranda is the town midway between Cairns and Atherton Tablelands. The historic Kuranda Scenic Railway train climbs through tunnels, across bridged ravines, past waterfalls and stops at Barron Falls on its way to the much photographed Kuranda Railway Station.
The road winds up the mountain with views of the coast and rainforest. Upon arrival you will discover the quaint little township of Kuranda with country style markets and galleries. The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is brilliant and the walk through free flight aviary of Birdworld, where birds live freely is a wonderful experience. The tropical hinterland and tablelands are a must see when visiting far north Queensland. Atherton is a prosperous and bustling town with all the services you may need, including restaurants, galleries, accommodation, beautiful parks. One of the most popular attractions are the Crystal Caves. Take a short drive up to Hallorans Hill for a dramatic scenic lookout over Lake Tinaroo and the rolling hillside that surrounds Atherton.
Local wildlife includes many species of rainforest animals and birds such as tree climbing kangaroos, platypus, echidnas, cassowaries, bandicoots and possums. Scenic drives reveal the diversity of the agriculture which include nuts, tea, avocadoes, timber, beef cattle and redclaw crayfish and the lush rainforests with waterfalls and cascading rivers.
