Location Information:
Year round sunshine and a temperate climate provide ample opportunities to swim, surf, windsurf and sail at two sandy beaches - Kellys Beach and Nielson Park Beach. Bundaberg Surf Lifesaving Club patrols both beaches, but Kellys Beach is more attractive to families with small children. It has a calm water swimming area known as Mooney's Creek. A wall built last century by Kanakas who were brought to Bundaberg to work in the cane fields encloses part of the beach, known as The Basin.
Underwater enthusiasts can snorkel and scuba dive from Barolin Rocks, at Innes Park to the south along the Barolin shoreline and for the surfing enthusiast Bargara is the site of the world's first artificially created surfing point break.
TurtlesMon Repos Beach – Australia’s best known and most accessible Sea Turtle Rookery is located in Mon Repos, just a few kms north of The Point Resort. This area is an Environmental Park designed to protect the turtles; thus ensuring their return to the area and providing opportunities for viewing of these beautiful creatures. After dark between November and February, Loggerhead, Flatback & green turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. Tiny hatchlings can be seen emerging from their sandy nests between January and the end of March. Rangers provide informative presentations and conduct guided tours onto the beach to see this natural marvel.
The turtles of Mon Repos Beach are one of the most inspiring attractions in the country and the Turtle Watching Season is between November & February each year.
From July to the end of October these fascinating mammals come to the Great Sandy Straits to have their young. Species are mostly Humpback whales, but Minke, Pilot and Southern Right whales are sometimes seen.
