Cairns is one of Australia’s most important tourist cities. It is located in the north of the state of Queensland and enjoys a tropical climate. During the southern winter it maintains temperatures in the mid twenties celsius and this contributes to its popularity as a tourist destination from the colder southern capitals.

Cairns is also the closest jumping off point for Cairns diving holidays on the Great Barrier Reef from the Australian mainland and has developed an enormous tourist industry centered around the diving and recreational fishing industries. Cairns is the best place in the world to go marlin fishing and aficionados gather here every year during the marlin season in attempt to catch a "Grander" or a fish over 1000kgs.

The Great Barrier Reef is within twenty nautical miles of the coast here which makes it easy for tourist operators to access. The variety of tours is spectacular. Literally million of people have visited the reef over the years on day and extended tours operating from Cairns. Quicksilver tours is probably the largest operator with a large fleet of fast wave piercing catamarans that dock at specially designed pontoons moored on the reef itself. They also have a fleet of coaches that will pick you up from your door at your Cairns accommodation There are also a number of other operators with similar operations.

The dive industry in Cairns caters for everybody. You can do a learn to dive course in the pool at your accommodation or on the reef itself or you can enjoy day or extended live aboard trips deep into the reef itself. Some of the worlds most famous dive sites are located nearby and these include the Ribbon Reefs and the Cod Hole where you can mix it with the local Potato Cod which are huge. There are also trips wide out into the Coral Sea to places like Mellish Reef which are absolutely pristine.

Just north from Cairns lies the popular coastal town of Port Douglas and this is the closest point of access for the world famous Daintree Rainforest. The Daintree is one of the world’s most important remaining expanses of rainforest. It is world heritage listed and a magnet for tourists wishing to explore and enjoy its attractions. It is filled with plants and wildlife, some of them unique to this precious location. It is possible to stay here as some exotic and superb resorts exist in this magical location. At the north of the Daintree lies Cooktown which has risen on the historical location where Capt James Cook beached his ship Endeavor for repairs after running aground on Endeavor reef. After departing from Cooktown he visited Lizard Island to the north. He climbed its peak to see the extent of the surrounding reefs and find a passage to the open sea. Inland from Cairns is the Atherton Tableland. The region has a more temperate climate and many wonderful tourist attractions. There is a great day trip on the Skyrail where you go up onto the tableland by cable car to the rainforest town of Kuranda and return to cairns on the train. This train trip takes you on the spectacular rail bridge across the Barron River and the Barron Falls which can be absolutely spectacular, especially during the wet season. Other attractions you should see while visiting the Atherton tableland include Lake Eacham, the Undarra Lavatubes and the curtain fig tree.

Cairns offers every other attraction that you could desire on your holiday. There are an assortment of wildlife parks.
