Cairns is the largest tourist centre along the Great Barrier Reef and the main departure point to the outer Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea. Its a centre for a whole host of activities in addition to reef trips and scuba diving - such as hiking, fishing, white-water rafting, canoeing, horse riding, outback 4WD safaris and skydiving.
Cairns has two popular islands close by: Fitzroy and Green Island, both of which attract lots of day-trippers. Fitzroy Island has good diving water right offshore and the Great Barrier Reef itself not far out.
A modern, sophisticated city - Cairns is an ideal base to explore the wider region with ideal access to the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef, rainforest (Wet Tropics) and outback.
The Cassowary Coast begins about 25 km south of Cairns with the township of Gordonvale and extends to the seaside town of Cardwell - about 180 km south. The coastal fringe has wide sandy beaches lined with small resorts and more than 25 offshore islands, such as Dunk, Bedarra, Orpheus and Hinchinbrook (the world's largest island National Park). Further inland is a range of popular rainforest picnic areas such as Josephine Falls, Babinda Boulders and Goldsborough Valley.
Thirty minutes northwest of Cairns is the postcard village of Kuranda. There are three spectacular ways to visit Kuranda - the Kuranda Scenic Railway, the 7.5 km long Skyrail Cableway, which glides over the rainforest just above tree level, and the winding Kuranda Range Road. Each way of arriving at Kuranda takes advantage of the coastal and tablelands panoramas and scenic views.
West of Cairns is the region known as the Atherton Tableland. This region features a range of small towns (eg Atherton, Mareeba, Millaa Millaa, Malanda and Ravenshoe), spectacular waterfalls in large patches of rainforest and crater lakes. Further west lie the vast outback areas of west and north-west Queensland and the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Port Douglas, just 62 km north of Cairns, has become a famous international holiday destination through its proximity to all the attractions of the reef and rainforest. Renowned as one of the most beautiful drives in Australia, the 40 minute trip from Cairns to Port Douglas follows closely along the coastline, past the palm-fringed Northern Beaches, with the blue and calm waters of the ocean on one side and the green ranges of the spectacular mountainous rainforest and bushland on the other side.
