Gateway to Cape York Peninsula, one of the world's last frontiers, is Cooktown, so named by Captain Cook. The Cape begins at Cooktown, which is easily accessible by air, sea or road from Cairns.
Cooktown, undoubtedly Australia's most historic town, sits on the Endeavour River between the outback and the sea. Most places of interest can be seen during a walk around town, which will be long remembered for its history and unspoilt beauty. Bicentennial Park is the setting for the annual re-enactment of Captain Cooks' landing which takes place during the Discovery Festival held each year on the long weekend in June. Cook spent nearly 7 weeks in Cooktown repairing his ship the Endeavour, which had much damage done to it from outlying reefs.
Fishing is a way of life here and people come from all over the world to try their hand at game fishing for black marlin and sailfish. There are many walking trails around Cooktown and one leads you to Grassy Hill, a popular spot because of its 360 degree views. Accommodation ranges from camping and backpackers to apartments and resorts.
A coastal road (4WD only) links Cape Tribulation to Cooktown, presenting a wonderful scenic route for all those adventurers. The Bloomfield River Falls are just north of Cape Tribulation. There is a grassed camping spot at Bloomfield Cabins & Camping, as well as lodge accommodation.
National Parks with waterfalls, swimming holes, platypus viewing are all part of this wonderful region of Queensland. Where else but Queensland can you stand on the northern most tip of Austalia, sail on the clear waters of the Torres Strait, discover underground lava tubes and aboriginal rock art.
Bird and wildlife abound amongst the swampy marshlands and rainforests of Cape York. The landscapes are rugged and spectacular. The Gulf Savannah - the outback by the sea is defined by is natural and unique history. Australia's last frontier with open woodlands, savannah grasslands, volcanic landforms and cool freshwater gorges.
