Discovery Coast Holidays

Lady Elliot Island

Discovery Coast holidays will take you to some of Queensland’s more laid back and family orientated holiday destinations. The Discovery Coast is located about four hours drive north of Brisbane and starts in the Rum City of Bundaberg and its coastal neighbour, Bargara. It runs north along the coast through the towns of 1770 and Agnes Water and incorporates the major Coastal cities of Gladstone and Rockhampton. The Capricorn Coast section incorporates the resort town of Yeppoon. Along its coastline and lying just offshore is the Capricorn section of The Great Barrier Reef and there are several island resorts like Lady Musgrave Island and Heron Island that are situated right on the reef itself.

A holiday on the Discovery Coast can incorporate some very popular activities like charter fishing, diving on the Great Barrier Reef, visiting National Parks like the Byfield National Park or Eurimbula National Park, surfing and visiting historical places. The whole region is very easy to access with regular flights into Bundaberg, Gladstone and Rockhampton and easy to use transfers to the other centers. In the south, the coastal town of Bargara is situated only fifteen minutes drive from Bundaberg and it features plenty of new resort style accommodation. There are two excellent golf courses and it is only a hop step and a jump to the Mon Repo turtle rookery where you can see female turtles visit the beach and lay their eggs and then return at a later date to see the hatchlings make their run for the open sea.

Further to the north is the town of 1770 from which you can take a tour to the historic Bustard Head Lighthouse or join one of the daily tours to Lady Musgrave Island lagoon which is right on the Great Barrier Reef. Both nearby islands of Lady Elliot Island and Heron Island have resorts on them that cater for tourists and those interested in diving on the reef and staying for a few days or a week. Heron Island is accessed from Gladstone and a fast ferry makes daily trips. Yeppoon is popular for many reasons. Golfers love it with two local resort courses. Rosslyn Bay boat harbour is the jumping off point for a holiday in the Keppel Islands and Great Keppel Island lies just offshore.

If you havn’t been to the Discovery coast before, now is the time to plan your next holiday there.
