Fraser Island, the world's largest sand island, is a place of exceptional beauty. The sand, surprisingly, supports fresh-water lakes ringed by white, sandy beaches perched in the tops of the dunes and fast-flowing streams, perfect places to relax and swim.

This is the only place in the world where tall rainforests are found growing on sand dunes at elevations or over 200 metres. Famous Seventy-Five Mile Beach is flanked by strikingly coloured sand cliffs and desert-like sand blows.

On a drive along the beach you will see the wreck of the cruise liner Maheno, which came ashore in 1935. Keep a look out for Australia's purest bred dingoes.

The island has a rich cultural history. Aboriginal legend names the island K'gari, meaning paradise. European history is rich with tales of shipwrecks, logging and early explorers. Its World Heritage listing ranks Fraser Island with Australia's Uluru, Kakadu and the Great Barrier Reef. As a precious part of Australia's natural and cultural heritage, it is protected for all to appreciate and enjoy.
