To experience the early settlement of Hervey Bay and Fraser Island, visit the Hervey Bay Historical Museum at Scarness or hire a boat and explore Woody Island National Park, halfway between Urangan (Hervey Bay) and Fraser Island, with its disused lighthouse and graves.
Arkarra Lagoons and Balinese Tea Gardens are amongst 30 acres of sub tropical rain forest. There are great walking trails here as well as the opportunity to handfeed the fish, turtles, ducks and native birdlife who inhabit the gardens, located at Dundowran Beach approximately 8mins from downtown Hervey Bay.
The Botanic Gardens are unusual in being built on the 6,000 year old former sand dunes. Highlights are the Aboriginal bush tucker trail and the Orchid House.
Hervey Bay hosts a week-long whale festival in August which is a major tourist attraction. This annual festival features several entertainment options such as an electric light parade and fireworks.
There is a huge range of sporting activities for visitors who prefer land based fun. Golf, lawn bowls, go karting, tennis, horse riding and skating plus many more are all part of the Hervey Bay lifestyle. If you feel very adventurous why not try skydiving, or sea kayaking.
