1 Nelly Bay Road, Magnetic Island

A backpackers tropical island paradise & only 20 minutes ferry ride from Townsville! Base Magnetic Island is the all new base with luxurious bures for couple, stylish dorms for singles & the best backpackers Island bar and cafe around. By day unwind, relax and chill out at the beach. At night groove by the pool with DJ's spinning their funky tunes and wicked beats. Australia's only backpackers right on the beach.

Magnetic Island is the only island on the North Queensland Coast with a delightful blend of untouched National Park, a resident population of about 2,500 and a variety of holiday resorts.

Although in the Tropics, the Townsville area is in a rain shadow which makes it the sunniest city on the Queensland coast (Magnetic Island averages over 320 days of sunshine per year). Just twenty minutes by fast "Cat" across Cleveland Bay from Townsville and you could be in what many consider Paradise!

More than half of the Island's 5,184 hectares is National Park, with Mt.Cook in the centre rising to 497 metres. Huge granite boulders are softened by tall Hoop pines, eucalypt forest and small patches of rainforest.

Getting There:

Passenger Ferry:

Base Bus meets most of the passenger ferries that come in. The ferry leaves from Townsville about 12 times a day. This trip costs $19.90 return. When you get to the island, all you have to do is walk up to the bus and jump on. (Watch your head). If for some freaky chance the bus is not there, then jump on the public bus (again, watch your head), and tell the driver you want express to base Backpackers. This trip will break the bank, at around 90c per trip.

Car Ferry:

The car ferry is only a 2 minute drive from the base Townsville. This trip will cost around $120 per car, depending on the size and weight. When you get off the ferry, head down the windy road. When you approach the main road (Magnetic super highway) turn left. Stick to the road past the other terminal, past the supermarket. When you are driving along the road next to the beach, you will see the resort at the end of the stretch. No doubt you will also be able to hear the music as well.
