The Marine Research & Education Centre has been set up to provide
an activity centre, combined with education and research facilities, to support
the Dolphin Care and Feeding Program.
The Centre is the first contact for guests wishing to take part in the feeding
session. Guests are required to register at the centre and at the same time
are advised of the procedures governing feeding.
- Photographs and a brief history of the dolphins, which frequent Tangalooma.
- Posters of dolphins and descriptions of their characteristics
- Posters and information on Whales, Dugongs, Marine and Wildlife
- Brochures outlining the Dolphin Care and Feeding Program
- Video presentations and talks on understanding of dolphin behaviour and needs, Whales, Marine Life, Wildlife and general natural history documentaries.
- A library of books and publications on dolphins and whales from various authors including government and conservation agencies
- And of course our Tangalooma Dolphin Education scientists and staff are happy to discuss or answer any questions our guests may have.
Eco Kids
The eco Kids programme has been designed by their Tangalooma Dolphin
Education Centre scientists to promote and encourage children?s knowledge on
dolphins, whales, environmental conservation and awareness.
- Marine Magnet Making: Kids learn all about the different animals that inhabit
marine environments while making and then painting their very own plaster magnets.
AGE GROUP: 5 years and up. Duration: 90 Minutes. Cost: A$7.50 - Marine Scavenger Hunt: As Eco Detectives kids must follow the clues that
lead them around the resort in search of some important answers and of course
the final bounty!
AGE GROUP: 5 years and up. Duration: 90 minutes. Cost: $7.50 - Microscopic Sea: This activity begins at the Resort jetty where the kids
use a plankton trawling net to collect microscopic specimens of plankton. These
specimens are taken back to the Marine Education Centre and with the help of
a microscope, identified. The kids are encouraged to draw a picture of what
they see under the microscope!
AGE GROUP: 5 years and up. Duration: 90 minutes. Cost: $7.50 - Bush Tucker: Children are taken on a walk around the Resort gardens and
beaches collecting bark and leaves along their way. They will learn how the
Aboriginals utilised the natural vegetation on Moreton Island to survive. Leaves
and bark collected are identified and then once back at the Marine Education
Centre the children are encouraged to make a bark and leaf rubbing picture to
take home.
AGE GROUP: 5 years and up. Duration: 90 minutes. Cost: $7.50 - Animal Tracks Plaster Casts: This activity involves a short stroll along
the beach and surrounds looking for animal footprints and tracks. Kids are encouraged
to identify these tracks and how this creature fits into the food web of life.
A plaster cast is made of this track, which is great way for the kids to get
their hands messy!! When the cast has dried the kids take it back to the Marine
Education Centre where they get to paint their plaster cast.
AGE GROUP: 5 years and up. Duration: 90 minutes. Cost: $7.50 - Chill-out Video Session: This is a fun activity for children of all ages.
Kids receive a colouring in booklet full of Tangalooma?s interesting marine
creatures while watching a marine themed movie shown on the ?big screen?. Movies
include ?Finding Nemo,? ?Shark?s Tale? and ?Free Willy?.
AGE GROUP: 5 Years and Up. Duration: 90 Minutes. Cost: $3.50 - Marine Mask-Making: Children discover some of the different plants and animals
that live within Moreton Bay and select their favourite mask. After colouring
in their chosen mask the children take part in a role play, identifying what
habitat they belong to, what they eat and what other plants and animal relationships
are important for their survival.
AGE GROUP: 5 Years and Up. Duration: 60 Minutes. Cost: $5 - Tiddlywinks: Children are given a basic lesson on Marine life found in Moreton
Bay through an interactive learning booklet. Topics include learning about the
Tangalooma resident dolphins, basic anatomy and ways the children can assist
the Marine Environment. They are encouraged to read, colour in pictures, join
dot to dot pictures and even spot the difference!
AGE GROUP: 4 ?8 Years. Duration: 60 Minutes. Cost: $7.50
