Lady Elliot Island Activities

At Lady Elliot Island, on the Great Barrier Reef, step off the beach and snorkel, swim or dive in an underwater world of brilliantly coloured species of marine life. The island’s coral lagoon is a perfect classroom for beginners or experienced divers, a true playground beneath the sea; home to fish, coral, clams, sea stars, turtles, dolphins and manta rays. There are many Lady Elliot Island attractions to be experienced.

Lady Elliot Island boasts one of the world’s most spectacular ‘nature calendars’: November to February, green and loggerhead turtles make their way up the same beach they were born on more than 50 years ago. February to April – thousands of baby turtles emerge and make their way to the sea. October to April – up to 50,000 sea birds choose Lady Elliot Island as their breeding and nesting ground providing excellent close-up opportunities for photographers and birdwatchers. May to June – Lady Elliot Island boasts excellent water visibility, warmer than the southern states waters are in summer. July to October – look for Humpback whales as they migrate past the island with whale songs being heard underwater almost every day. There is always a natural wonder to witness.

Beach snorkelling is an activity that you can participate in at any time. Please contact the Dive Shop to find which side of the island has the best conditions on the day and news as to whether turtles, mantas, whales etc are close to shore.

Reef Walking – when the tide is low, you can venture all the way through the lagoon from the beach to the reef edge. You’ll see a multitude of marine life as our experienced guide introduces you to the complexities of the reef eco-system.

Lady Elliot Island is the perfect getaway to relax and enjoy a unique unpretentious island with fun for all the family. Explore the island, tour the reef in a glass bottom boat, learn to scuba dive, feed the fish in the fish pool, take a guided reef walk, try your hand at volleyball, table tennis, pool or simply find a deserted beach and stretch out!
