The township of Esk was named after the River Esk in Scotland and was first settled in 1874. Esk is surrounded by mountains and enjoys a sub-tropical climate. Located in the heart of the Somerset Region, it is best known for its stunning backdrop of Mount Glen Rock.

The Shire is also known as the Valley of the Lakes, with Lake Wivenhoe (two and a half times the size of Sydney Harbour) and Lake Somerset only a short drive from the Caravan Park, providing for all manner of water related activities.
