Cairns is surrounded by things to do and see. To the east lies the Great Barrier Reef and there is a mind boggling assortment of trips and cruises to see it. Many will pick up from you door. When in Cairns it is a really good idea to hire a rental car as there are so many spectacular destinations within easy driving range for a day trip. To the north lies the Daintree rainforest, Cooktown and Cape Tribulation. This region is world heritage listed and should be on every tourists itinerary. To the west is the Atherton Tableland and great attractions like the Undarra Lava tubes, Lake Eacham and the Curtain fig tree. To the south is Mission Beach and fabulous island resorts like Dunk Island, Bedarra Island and Hinchinbrook Island where Nims Island was recently filmed. In Cairns itself a day spent with the Skyrail and the Tjapukai aboriginal display are both essential for a complete holiday.
