There are plenty of Townsville activities to entertain your family during a tropical holiday. Townsville is a modern city where lots of activities and attractions exist to help you enjoy your holiday. The hinterland to the north is magnificent. Take a drive up the range to Paluma and swim in the crystal clear creek that flows down the mountainside. Have coffee in the local café which is on the edge of the rainforest or go bushwalking. The “magnificent riflebird” is a common sight here and this is one of the few places in Australia that it can be seen.
Back in town, The Strand is the focal point of waterside activities in Townsville. Here you will find a great water park for the kids, salt water and fresh water swimming pools, piers with fish cleaning facilities and a range of restaurants set right on the sea wall overlooking the ocean and nearby Magnetic Island. The Palmer Street dining precinct is filled with great restaurants and plenty of new top class holiday spots. It faces onto the Ross Creek boat harbour facility which is lined on the northern side by lots of tourist infrastructure that includes the Reef HQ Aquarium and museum as well as night clubs and restaurants. The Townsville yacht club and marina are great places to visit. The Townsville Jupiter’s casino also provides excellent lodgings as well as the opportunity to try your luck at the gaming tables.
Water activities are popular here. Fishing and underwater excursions and dive charters are popular, with regular trips to the Yongala shipwreck for certified divers. Magnetic Island lies just offshore and is a popular holiday destination. It has a regular ferry service and is a fantastic place to hire a mini moke for the day and enjoy the local beaches, coves, scenery, golf and wild life. Magnetic Island has fantastic holiday accommodation with plenty of waterfront apartments available for rental. Further offshore is the Great Barrier Reef and there are regular tourist trips available.
The city of Townsville is sports mad and there are local teams in the national league for basketball, soccer and rugby league. Home games are always well attended and every visitor is welcome to come along and join in the fantastic atmosphere. Townsville has several excellent shopping malls so you can shop till you drop if that is your thing.
