Fraser Island is made completely of sand and provides the best 4X4 driving venue in Australia. It is home to magnificent rainforests, crystal clear lakes and stupendous beaches. During the months from mid July till early November thousands of humpback whales visit the Platypus Bay area inside of Hervey Bay itself. A dozen or so charter vessels depart from the Urangan Boat harbour, every day during the Hervey Bay whale watching season. You can choose to go for a day, a half day or just a couple of hours. Your kids will be absolutely enthralled when a 40 tonne whale comes close to your boat or breaches out of the water and falls back with an incredible splash. Some of the activities you will witness cannot be seen anywhere else in the world.
Hervey Bay also has a choice of fantastic family accommodation with plenty of resorts and apartments in locations like the Urangan Boat Harbour or along the Hervey Bay esplanade itself.
